Despite his youth, Minneapolis-based guitarist and composer, Will Schmid, has been gigging at venues throughout the Twin Cities for nearly six years. His duos, trios, and quartets frequent popular spots including the Black Dog Cafe in St. Paul, Jazz Central in Minneapolis, and the 318 Cafe in Excelsior. Often sharing the stage with the likes of Jay Epstein, Greg Lewis, and Jake Baldwin, his bands have opened for Billy Peterson, Eric Kamau Grávátt, and Happy Apple (Dave King). With fellow guitarist Adam Astrup, Schmid co-led ensembles at the 2016 Winter Jazz Festival, the 2016 Twin Cities Jazz Festival, and the 2016 Iowa City Jazz Festival. Most recently, Schmid brought his original music to Matthew Garrison's world renown ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn, NY, presented his quartet at the 2018 Iowa City Jazz Festival, and recorded with the modern jazz collective SPACE for 2019 album release.
Schmid now spends much of his time in Cleveland where - while pursuing a degree in physics at Case Western Reserve University - he studies with Don Better and Eileen Moore and continues to play and compose. In addition to occasional gigs in Cleveland and New York City, you can find him still playing regularly in the Twin Cities.
